A French balance lantern clock , C.F. Suedois Angers, circa 1650

Description

movement with balance wheel and alarm, fine brass case.

The centre of the dial is finely engraved with beautiful flowers and is below signed C.F. Suedois A Angers. The chapter ring has Roman numerals and a fine iron single hour hand. in the centre there is the fine high relief alarm disc with flower motive. Above is the fret made in the ‘Kwab”-style, developed by the Van Vianen brothers.

The movement is weight driven and can be regulated with the lead balls in the hollow weight. The duration is a day. The clock has the original balance wheel without balance spring or compensation and was made before the invention of the pendulum by Huygens in 1656! The clock has an alarm that can be set by the alarm disc and activated by the smaller weights at the back.

The fine brass case has doors to the sides. The whole is suspended on the wall by a hoop and spurs.
