A miniature Dutch Frisian little skipper striking wall clock, circa 1800.

Description

‘Stoelschippertje’or little skipper

The term ‘stoelschippertje’ which translates roughly to ‘little skipper’ refers to rare miniature stoolclocks that, according to tradition, were used on board tugboats or barges. The combination of a verge escapement with a short fixed pendulum keeps the clock running even when it is slightly askew. Due to its small dimensions, the clock fitted in the cabin of these barges. Not only are they rare, but because they are so small, these clocks fit very easily into an interior and combine well with other interior pieces. This makes them popular not only with collectors but also with first time buyers.

Polychrome dial

The polychrome dial has a chapter ring with Roman numerals and is decorated with flowers. The pierced cast hands are made of brass. The hour hand has an integrated alarm disc.

striking

The movement has a top and bottom plate that are connected with beautifully turned brass pillars. It is driven by a weight and is of one-day duration. As mentioned above, the movement is regulated by verge escapement in combination with a fixed pendulum. The clock strikes the whole and half hours on a bell by means of a countwheel. Finally there is an alarm mechanism.

Cast lead ornaments

The dial is decorated on all sides with pierced cast lead ornaments that are ‘gilded’ with gold paint. The polychrome painted bracket is surmounted by a similar ornament. The case housing the movement has doors to the sides making it visible. The back board is decorated with mermaids and terminates with a finial.
