A fine English engraved gilt brass travel timepiece with blue john panels, Barwise London, circa 1840

Description

The dial

The 4.6-cm wide silvered dial has a foliate engraved centre and Roman numerals. The blued steel hands are of the Breguet type. The dial is recessed in a similarly engraved gilt brass mask.

The movement

The well made movement has a fusee and chain to regulate the variation of the main spring. The clock has a duration of eight days. It is regulated by an English lever escapement in combination with a fine bi-metallic balance. The back plate is signed Barwise London.

The case

The rectangular gilt brass case has similar fine foliate engraving throughout. It is surmounted by a shaped handle and four ball corner finials. The fine escapement is visible through a beveled glass panel. The sides and back have inset Blue John panels. The whole is raised on flat bun feet.
