A small French gilt brass gorge case striking and alarm carriage clock by Margaine, circa 1870.
Description
The dial
The 4-cm enamel dial has Roman numerals and has blued steel Breguet hands. It is fitted recessed in a silvered mask with the alarm subsidiary below.
The movement
The movement is driven by two spring barrels and has a duration of eight days. It is regulated by platform lever escapement in combination with a bi-metallic balance with adjustment screws. The clocks strikes the hours and half hours on a gong. The last hour that has struck will be repeated when the button on top is pressed. The alarm is activated by winding a small auxiliary spring barrel. The back plate is stamped with the beehive trade mark of Margaine.
The case
The three quarter size gilt brass gorge case is surmounted by a handle and has a large beveled glass panel on top revealing the escapement. There are sharp mouldings throughout and beveled glass panels to all sides. The whole is raised on flat feet. The original travel case is withh the clock.
