A miniature Dutch Frisian polychrome stoelschippertje ‘wall clock’, circa 1780

Description

‘Stoelschippertje’or little skipper

The term ‘stoelschippertje’ which translates roughly to ‘little skipper’ refers to rare miniature stoolclocks that, according to tradition, were used on board tugboats or barges. The combination of a verge escapement with a short fixed pendulum keeps the clock running even when it is slightly askew. Due to its small dimensions, the clock fitted in the cabin of these barges. Not only are they rare, but because they are so small, these clocks fit very easily into an interior and combine well with other interior pieces. This makes them popular not only with collectors but also with first time buyers.

Alarm disc

The polychrome dial has a chapter ring with Roman numerals. Above this chapter ring, two horn-blowing cherubs are depicted next to a wreath of flowers. Further flowers are also painted in the center and below. The pierced cast hands are made of brass. The hour hand has an integrated alarm disc.

Half hour striking

The movement has a top and bottom plate connected by beautifully turned pillars. It is driven by a weight and is of one day duration. As mentioned above, the movement is regulated by a verge escapement in combination with a short fixed pendulum. The clock has half hour striking on a bell by means of a countwheel. The clock is also equipped with an alarm.

Cast ornaments

The dial has cast gilt lead ornaments in the shape of lions on the sides, with foliate pierced ornaments above and below. The polychrome painted bracket also has a similar ornament with seated monkeys. There are doors on the sides of the movement case so that it is clearly visible. The back board is decorated with mermaids and ends with an ornamental knob.
