A Swiss Art Deco subminiature silver guilloche enamel travel clock, circa 1920.

Description

Subminiature

In the last decade of the nineteenth century, the Swiss developed an eight-day miniature movement that was considerably smaller than that of the French miniature travel clocks. That is why they are referred to as ‘subminiature’. Initially, these movements were used for clocks modeled after the French travel clocks. A few decades later, around 1910, a new type of case was introduced. These were made of solid silver and often had a geometric shape fitting the Art Deco style. These silver cases were then machine-engraved, a process known as guilloche, after which they were covered with translucent enamel. The result is a surface that reflects light in a beautiful, playful way. The quality and detail of the enamel is outstanding and still is admired today. These miniature clocks were undoubtedly intended for the top segment of the market. Of course, they could be used as real travel clocks. But these little ‘jewels’ were also very suitable as precious gifts or small objects to admire. This miniature clock is even more special than most, because of its expressive decoration, unusual color, and enameled back door.

Silvered dial

The 1.8-cm guilloche engraved silvered dial has Arabic numerals. It bears the inscription ‘8 days’ and ‘Swiss’. The Breguet hands are made of blued steel.

Swiss made

The jeweled movement is driven by a spring barrel and is of eight day duration. It is regulated by an escapement with a club-tooth anchor escapement in combination with a balance. The movement is stamped ‘Swiss made’.

Translucent enamel

The slightly arched case is made of sterling silver. It is decorated on all sides with a beautiful guilloche engraving overlaid with yellow translucent enamel with a black enamel lining. It is surmounted by a small curved hinged handle. The clock stands on ball feet. The bottom is stamped with silver hallmarks and marked ‘Sterling silver’, ‘0.925’ and ‘Swiss’.
