French-gilt-brass-one-piece-series I-Paul-Garnier-striking-travel-carriage-clock-Baullier et fils-Paris-

A French gilt brass ‘Series I’ striking travel clock with chaff-cutter escapement, circa 1830

Description

Series I

Although the clock is signed Baullier et Fils, we can state with certainty that this clock was made in the workshop of Paul Garnier. Not only does it have the same case and dimensions as his ‘Series I’ clocks, but it even has a chaff-cutter escapement, which Garnier invented and patented. It was the low production cost of this escapement, the use of half-fabricated movements and simple but elegant cases that made it possible to produce reasonably affordable travel clocks. A jury report from 1834 mentions the large and excellent range of travel clocks that Garnier exhibited. It also states that in the two years prior, he had sold more travel clocks than had ever been sold before. Lower prices and elegant design led to much higher sales. This success encouraged other manufacturers to start producing travel clocks as well. This led to the emergence of a very large-scale travel clock production industry. In his study of Garnier’s travel clocks, Derek Roberts distinguishes four types in this development. This early clock with front winding and a typical large one-piece case belongs to the first series. Paul Garnier wasn’t just a good clockmaker; he was a very good businessman also. By selling his clocks to other makers like this one, he could boost his sales even more. The elegant case, the signature escapement and rarity make this a beautiful and interesting clock.

Engine turned

The 9-cm silvered engine turned brass dial has Roman numerals. The Breguet hands are made of blued steel.

Chaff-cutter escapement

The movement is driven by two spring barrels and is of eight day duration. It is regulated by a chaff-cutter escapement in combination with a plain brass balance. The clock has half hour rack striking on a bell. The back plate is signed Baullier et Fils à Paris.

One-piece case

The gilt brass one-piece case consists of sharply moulded styles and is surmounted by a hinged handle. It has beveled glass panels on all sides, including the top, which allows the escapement to be clearly visible. The front panel can be slid upwards to access the hands and to wind the clock. It has a profiled plinth with incised corners.
