Description

Shou symbol

This type of miniature clock was made in Switzerland, where in the last decades of the nineteenth century, a very small movement was developed. It was much smaller than the ones made in France and made it possible to produce substantially smaller clocks than before. Therefore these are called ‘subminiature’ in the English-speaking countries. The geometrical shape of this lovely clock is typical of the Art Deco period, when it was made. The omittance of lavish decoration and a more functional way of designing were something that was started by the Arts & Crafts movement and which was still adhered to. Another source of inspiration came from Oriental Art, the strong colours of lacquer work and their gilt adornment. Below the dial there is the ‘Shou’ symbol, which stands for a long life. The symmetrical shape of the sign makes it fit perfectly in the geometrical patterns of the Art Deco. In this way both the aesthetic and symbolic come together in this lovely timepiece.

Arabic numerals

The 1.8-cm dial has Art Deco Arabic numerals and blued Breguet hands. The center is embellished with an engraved circle. Below the numeral 6, the dial is inscribed SWISS.

Bi-metallic balance

The movement is driven by a spring barel with fixed winding. It is regulated by a Swiss clubtooth lever escapement in combination with a bi-metallic balance. The movement is marked Swiss made, 2 adjustments, 15 jewels FIFTEEN, Swiss.

Enamel

The rectangular case wis made of sterling silver. The front, sides and top are embellished with blue enamel panels with silver banding. The front panel has a shou symbol beneath the dial. The back has a hinged lid embellished with geometrical engraving. The whole is raised on bun feet. The recatngular shape odf the case, the numerals and shou symbol all fit very well in the Art Deco style. The original display case is with the clock.
