Description

Industrial clocks

The last quarter of the 19th century saw the emergence in France of a small production of clocks that we now refer to as industrial clocks. These are clocks whose design has to do with the industrial revolution, shipping and innovation of the period. A common feature is the marble plinth on flat brass feet. Besides the beautiful design, many of the models are equipped with an automaton. The larger models often have an additional mechanism with a spring barrel that then drives an automaton. Such is the case with this beautiful ‘Lighthouse’. It doesn’t just show the time but also has a sperate mechanism which needs to be wound daily that makes the ‘lights’ turn. The architectural case executed in partly sivered brass combinatined with the colourful onyx make for a very attractive spectacle that is enhanced by the revolving lights.

Silvered brass

The architectural case is shaped like a lighthouse. The two-tiered structure stands on an onyx base. Both tiers are constructed of silvered brickwork with brass cornerstones and architraves. At the front are doors below, in the middle a clock and a window above. The flat roof is lined with a gallery. In the middle is a brass dome with a weather vane under which the light turn.

Roman numerals

The black dial has applied brass Roman numerals. The foliate pierced hands are also made of brass.

Rack striking

The movement is driven by two spring barrels and has a duration of at least eight days. It is regulated by a Brocot-anchor escapement in combination with a pendulum. The clock has half hour striking on a gong by means of rack striking.
