A swiss ‘Nicole Frères’ cylinder music box, circa 1840.
Description
The spring driven mechanism is stamped NICOLE FRERES A GENEVE and 22435. It plays one of four tunes with a 20.5 cm cylinder on a finely toothed comb. The burr elm box has string inlay and a hinged side panel. Behind this there is the winding arbor and three operating levers. One for play/stop playing, one for repeating/change melody and the last for direct stop playing. The tunes are;
- Valse de Venise
- Wreath of Roses
- Rory O’More
- Fine old English Gentleman
This mechanical instrument plays lovely and clear. It is astonishing how such a compact box can sound has such a full sound.
