A rare French Art Deco Reutter patent wall Atmos clock model RM1, circa 1934

Description

Jean-Léon Reutter

Jean-Léon Reutter presented his first prototype atmos clock in 1928. The ingenious movement that winds itself by means of temperature changes, received much appraisal and admiration. Around 1930 a commercial production was started of these clocks with many different cases. Besides the now known models with glass panels in a metal frame there were more traditional models based on antique clocks. There were also much more avant garde models. This is model RM 1 where the characteristics of Art Deco can be seen very clearly. The rectangular silhouette and geometric shapes are typical of this period, as are the numerals on the dial and the shape of the hands. This fine clock was and is a real design object.

Atmos

.
The lacquered dial has Arabic numerals and is signed ATMOS pendule perpetuelle below the 12. The black steel hands are of the Breguet type. The dial has a nickel-plated bezel.

temperature changes

.
The movement runs on a spring. It is regulated by the large balance which is visible through the glass panels. It has an oscillation time of 30 seconds. This spring is wound up by the rotation of the drum caused by temperature changes. The clock requires so little energy that with a temperature difference of one degree Centigrade, it keeps running for 48 hours. Since there are always temperature differences, the clock is wound up each time. This is why Reutter also called the clock Pendule perpetuelle.

Nickel-plated case

The rectangular nickel-plated case has glass panels on the front and sides. It is mounted on a black wooden back and base. Below it is a black wooden console separated by a nickel-plated divider. The case mounted on the wall by means of a suspension ring and has adjustment screws at the back.
