Amusement

Surely the combination of colours of the marble, gilt bronze and the polychrome enamel would draw attention straight away. And in that first glance, one might not directly see that this is a clock at all. But it is actually a clock with the arms of the lady showing the time across two enamel scales. It must have aroused curiosity and amusement in most who saw it. This phenomenon, that a clock isn’t just a timekeeper and an ornament, but an object for entertainment, is something that is more often seen in the second half of the nineteenth century. And it is a quality that still is admired and desired today. The fantasy and ingenuity combined with the colourful design turn this clock into a beautiful and fascinating object.

Escapement

The timepiece is driven by a spring barrel and is of eight-day duration. It is regulated by a platform anchor escapement in combination with a bimetallic balance.

Polychrome enamel

The movement is fitted in the green marble base, which is raised on gilded brass feet. On top of this, is an arch with pilasters, surmounted by a sunburst. Under this arch stands a gilded female figure in an evening gown against a polychrome enameled backdrop decorated with flowers. The time is indicated by the lady’s arms on two arched enamel dials.
